RELIEF
for clarinet
and string orchestra
Relief was originally written for the clarinettist Tara Bouman and string quintet on the occasion of a Christmas concert in the Kölner Philharmonie (Cologne Philharmonic Hall) on 27th December 2006. Here, it is presented in a version with string orchestra.
The piece is simply structured: A peaceful theme is presented by the clarinet and the strings, and followed by an improvisation by the clarinet over a harmonic development. This leads to a solo improvisation by the clarinet which is soon accompanied by a cantus firmus on the cello. The initial theme sounds again as a coda.
Relief was completely written with Tara and her sensitive way of playing in mind. It allows her a lot of room for her own creativity.
